FRIDTJOF STURM (cello)
...was born 1972 in Bielefeld into a family of musicians. After first cello lessons at the age of eight and a prestudy at HfM Detmold
with Prof. Irene Güdel he studied with Prof. Markus Nyikos at UdK Berlin. He finished his studies with Prof. Wolfgang Emmanuel Schmidt at HfM „Hanns Eisler“ Berlin (concert exam). Many other mentors had great additional influence like Wolfgang Boettcher, Dmitry Ferschtman, Bernhard Gmelin, Hans-Christian Schweiker, Wen-Sinn Yang, Thomas Brandis, Hatto Beyerle, Hans-Dietrich Klaus, Alice and Eleonore Schönfeld and the Prazak Quartet.
In 1989 Fridtjof Sturm founded the »Sturm-Bergk-Quartett« together with his brother, his sister and a cousin. For many years he had concert tours with this ensemble through Spain and Germany at festivals like Schwtzingen, Oberstdorfer Musiksommer, Schloss Elmau etc. recorded by big broadcasting institutions. The ensemble was coached by Prof. Eberhard Feltz and members of the Cherubini- and the Alban Berg Quartet.
Additionally Fridtjof Sturm joined the orchstra acedemy of the Schleswig Holstein Musikfestival as a solocellist, as well in Gustav Mahler Orchester (Vienna), in RIAS Youth Orchestra Berlin, in Verbier Festival Orchestra (Schweiz) beside others. Under conductors like Claudio Abbado, Pierre Boulez, James Levine, Zubin Mehta, Paavo Järvi, Kent Nagano, Yuri Termirkanov etc. he toured through Europe, Japan, Russia, Asia same as North- and Southamerica. He played concerts in the most prestigious concerts halls like Carnegie Hall and Concertgebouw Amsterdam.
After term contracts and guest engagements at German Symphony Orchestra Berlin (DSO), Radio Symphony Orchestra Berlin (RSB), NDR Radio Philharmonic Hannover, Hamburg States Orchestra (sometimes as a solocellist), Theatre Darmstadt, and States Philharmony of Rheinland-Pfalz Ludwigshafen, he became a permanent member of the Heidelberg Philharmonic, before he moved to Rostock to get the job as solocellist at Philharmony of Northern Germany.
Fridtjof Sturm was supported by the Menuhin Foundation "Live Music Now" and the "Foundation of Arts and Culture of NRW". He plays a cello by the Italian violinmaker Celeste Farotti (Milano) of 1906, that was financed by private sponsors.
